“May I ask you, good
father and mother, have you made the
singing of hymns one of the religious exercises of your home?” writes a
prominent clergyman of Toronto. “You
understand, of course,” says he, “no offence is intended by the question. But is it not possible that many fathers and
mothers do no realize the importance of this practice?”
“You are trying to do
your duty towards your children; you watch over them night and day! You teach them religion regularly; you take
care that their reading be wholesome and instructive. All this is beautiful beyond compare; earth
has nothing which so challenges the admiration of all. Now tell me is there not some thing that has
been forgotten?
“What would our
churches be without music, without singing?
What a void we should experience if our hearts were never stirred by
those sweet devotional strains which make it so easy to give our affections to
God.
“Now if you find the
singing of hymns of so much assistance while attending public religious
exercises in our churches, is there any more reason why they should not also
find a place among the private devotions in your homes?”
