Mankind is proud of the
bee-like ingenuity and accuracy with which it pursues many of its activities;
but we cannot be sure that the main result of our labor is not something as
remote and unsuspected by ourselves as its service to the spring flowers is by
the bee. We do not always foresee the
reactions of our most careful enterprises; and, while the bee working among the
spring blossoms may recommend us modesty, the wind which has its own more
indiscriminate but none the less effective system of fertilization, calls us to
hope.
