To be doing good, to be
seeking others’ instruction, relief, moral
elevation, present comfort, permanent well-being, is the real business of the
Christian life. To make the household
happy and comfortable, to consider the interests and claims of all dependents;
to watch over the virtue of the exposed; to put children on the track of duty
and usefulness; to listen to the cry of the needy; to remove stumbling-blocks
from the path of those who must needs walk in darkness; to seize the chance of
serving any mortal creature as a glad opportunity of honoring God and
humanity—this is the evidence of that love in the heart, and that ever active
principle of obedience to Christ’s example, compared with which professions,
experiences, and prayers, and fervours of feeling are trifling and deceptive.
