The wisdom of the
Ancients and the Moderns has never been able to answer the question:
“Why is life?” Those whose lot has been
cast in the shadows and in the lonely paths of sorrow ask themselves the
question again and again. But there
comes no answer. Life remains the great
perplexity.
Yet there is an answer
hidden in the human heart. It is the
instinct for the achievement and making of character. Fame, riches, power, merely intensify the
misery of existence if they be obtained at the price of character. The declining years, with the shadowy goal,
terrorize only they who have ignored this great truth.
The building of
character is the highest calling of man.
It is life’s answer to the challenge of death.
