Maxims by an anonymous hand

·         In spite of the fox’s cunning his skin is often sold.
·         It’s like looking for a hound without knowing its color.
·         Don’t give cherries to pigs—don’t give advice to a fool.
·         A bad reaper never got a good reaping hook.
·         What would shame him would turn back a funeral.
·         Young people don’t know what age is and old people forget what youth was.
·         A sword, a spade and a thought should never be allowed to rust.
·         When fools make mistakes they lay the blame on Providence.
·         The heaviest ear of corn is the one that lowliest bends its head.
·         The shoemaker’s wife an’ the smith’s mare aften goes barefitted.
·         The lucky man waits for prosperity.  The unlucky man gives a blind leap.
